24 September 1999 - Tom Horst ('65)
I am currently head of the Surface Sensing Group, Atmospheric Technology Division, National Center for Atmospheric Research, where I do research in atmospheric turbulence and atmosphere-surface turbulent exchange fluxes. I manage a small group of scientists and engineers responsible for providing surface meteorological measurement capability to the university research community. After VU, I got a MS in physics at U. of Illinois, 1967 PhD in atmospheric sciences at U. of Washington, 1977. My education in physics provided a solid foundation for branching into the atmospheric sciences, in particular the study of the turbulent atmospheric boundary layer.
After working as a graduate teaching assistant in physics at the U. of Illinois, I was very greatful for the close relationship with the faculty that I had experienced at Valpo.
