Prof. Morris on Leave of Absence

August 2000

Prof. Gary Morris joined the VU physics and astronomy faculty in fall 1998 and remained with us for 2 years during which time he endeared himself to his many students. He also was instrumental in establishing the ballroom dancing activities at VU which continue even after he has gone. Prof. Morris had an opportunity to return for a limited term appointment to Rice University in Houston, TX where he received his Ph.D. in atmospheric physics and regarded it as a unique opportunity. He was granted a leave of absence from his duties at VU and we are anticipating his return to VU when his activities at Rice University have concluded. He returned to VU in the fall of 2000 to give a colloquium (can't let him get away that easy) and to attend the first ballroom dance of fall, 2000. While at VU for those 2 years he established an active, funded research program with NASA, and spent two summers at his research center, the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. In summer 1999 he sponsored physics major Lisa Neef on a summer research program at Goddard. You can contact him from his www page.
