April 1998
Dr. Douglas Osheroff, Professor of Physics at Stanford University, is the recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in physics. Coincidentally, he shared a house with Prof. Bob Manweiler (VU) while both were graduate students at Cornell University some years back. It was during this time at Cornell that Dr. Osheroff made his discoveries of the remarkable properties of He-3 for which he was honored with the Nobel Prize. Not long after he was awarded the prize, Prof. Manweiler invited him to visit VU and the visit was arranged for April 1998. His visit included a public lecture on Thursday evening and a colloquium at our usual time on Friday afternoon, 3 April 1998. Dr. Osheroff had lunch with our physics major students and faculty on Friday and dinner Friday evening with several members of the Department, the Provost, and the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was an engaging speaker and his enthusiasm served as motivation for both students and faculty. On Saturday, Dr. Osheroff, an avid photographer, went photographing in downtown Chicago with Prof. Manweiler as his guide. We were enriched by his visit.
