Selected to attend APS meeting in Monterey, CA
October1999
Junior physics major, Jon Thoms was selected by the Division of Nuclear Physics (DNP) of the American Physical Society to present the results of his summer research at the DNP meeting in October 1999. Jon's travel was fully paid by the DNP, a credit to his work. Moreover, this was the second time in two years that his work was selected for presentation. Last year, Jon presented at the DNP meeting in Santa Fe, NM in October 1998. This year, Jon presented the studies he had done in summer, 1999 on Monte Carlo simulations of neutron interactions in NaI crystals in the Crystal Ball detector. (A brief description of this experiment is given along with our other research activities on our Faculty and Student Research page. You can link to the Crystal Ball www page from there to learn more about the experiment.) These studies he did this past summer were done at VU on the UNIX workstations and played an important role in our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the various neutron simulation packages available. His work was supervised by Dr. Stanislaus and Dr. Koetke. Jon's work was presented along with other selected students from across the country in poster sessions at the Asilomar Conference Center, the site of the DNP meeting. While attending the conference, Jon had the opportunity to attend sessions and to interact with other physicists. Jon's poster presentation is currently on display in the Neils Science Center across from room 127.
