At the conclusion of the academic year, 1997-98, Dr. Karl Vogler elected to accept a position at Northern Kentucky University. After over 6 years at VU, Dr. Vogler secured a position on the physics faculty at NKU located near Cincinati in Kentucky. Dr. Vogler was trained as an astronomer, receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming. After a one year teaching position at SUNY, Oswego, NY, he joined the VU faculty as a visiting assistant professor. He concluded his appointment this spring.
During his stay, he taught PHYS-111 and PHYS-112 in addition to astronomy laboratory and lecture. He helped with numerous upgrades at the Valparaiso University Astronomical Observatory, the most recent being the development and installation of a guide scope which was mounted on the main telescope. The guide scope was fitted with a CCD camera which allowed the main telescope to better track the object under study while data were being taken with a CCD or spectrometer or photometer.
Dr. Vogler and his wife Lorrie became parents to both of their children, Heather and Ashley while in Valparaiso. Ashley was born on the same day, in the same hospital as Jonathan Zygmunt!
We wish Dr. Vogler and his family farewell as they leave Valpo.
