Technology Upgrades - Then and Now

March 2002

Back in 1990 the the physics department purchased the larger of the two disk drives pictured above. The "full height, 5.5 inch drive" cost nearly $5000. It could hold a remarkable 1.2 GigaBytes of data. That drive was replaced today with the other, smaller device. The new drive cost only $1400, is less than one quarter the size of the old one, but can store 180.0 GigaBytes of data. The Stanley screwdriver (philips head) pictured above predates both drives. In spite of the scratches, rust, misuse, and involvement in paint spills, the Stanley remains compatable with numerous computer systems, appliances, furniture, and shelving.
